The 3DMark score was a little surprising. The Surface Laptop 4 demonstrates a more modest 33 percent increase in graphics performance versus the similarly equipped Surface Laptop 3. (The benchmark crashed while running it on the Surface Laptop 1 and Surface Laptop 2, which is why results aren’t shown for those models.) In our performance testing, we use UL’s other benchmark, 3DMark, to assess graphics performance. In the real-world HandBrake test, the Surface Laptop 4 again offers essentially double the performance of its predecessor. Maxon’s Cinebench provides a simple, comparative metric for evaluating laptops, desktops, and individual processors. Here, the Surface Laptop 4 offers just over double (104 percent) of the CPU performance of the fastest Surface Laptop 3. In day-to-day work as measured by PCMark, it appears that there’s not a lot of difference between the Surface Laptop 4 and Surface Laptop 3.īecause CPU performance is so critical for everyday laptop performance, we test it in two ways. UL’s PCMark 10 measures everything from how well your laptop will perform in a video chat, to word processing and spreadsheet work, photo editing and rendering, and even light gaming. We’re also artificially limiting the scope of this performance preview to demonstrate how the Surface Laptop 4 compares to the various iterations of just the Surface Laptop 3 and other Microsoft devices. We haven’t performed battery life tests yet either. This story offers a sneak peek solely at the Surface Laptop 4’s performance on a limited number of benchmarks, ahead of our full review. You may notice some slight differences from the numbers we eventually publish in our review, as we normally run multiple instances of each benchmark to ensure accuracy.
